Philoptics Addition Memo: Glass Substrates and Silicon Photonics Exposure

A record of diversifying in semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment while keeping exposure to glass substrates and silicon photonics

Investment decisions are your own responsibility. This material is research and is not a recommendation to buy or sell.

0. Bottom line first

Semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment are not an area I know deeply, so I decided to diversify. Still, I believe silicon photonics and glass-substrate-related names are themes I should hold, so I added Philoptics.

This post is less a detailed earnings analysis of Philoptics itself and more a portfolio memo tying together the semiconductor materials/equipment themes I am watching and the related names I have been adding.

1. Why I added Philoptics

Interpretation: Because I do not know every company in semiconductor materials and equipment deeply, I chose a diversified approach within the related themes rather than relying too heavily on one stock.

Diversified approach to semiconductor materials/equipmentUse diversification in areas I know less well
Silicon photonicsInter-chip bottlenecks and speed innovation
Glass substratesNext-generation semiconductor substrate theme
PhilopticsAdded as a related name
Secure exposure to key themes while approaching the sector through diversification.

2. Silicon photonics study

For silicon photonics, I refer back to an earlier study note. In the source memo, I summarized the idea that inter-chip connections are always a bottleneck and that innovation in this technology can determine semiconductor speed, so it deserves study.

3. Materials/equipment names added since last December

This Philoptics addition sits within a broader pattern of increasing exposure to semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment since last December.

4. My portfolio lens

  • Because semiconductor materials and equipment are outside my strongest area, I approach them with diversification.
  • Silicon photonics and glass substrates are themes I believe are worth holding.
  • Philoptics was added to gain exposure to those themes.
  • I had already been adding related names such as HPSP and K&J during market weakness.
